Our work in Indonesia
Since 2014, Indonesia has been a NHRF priority country. Our work in Indonesia is primarily on two of our three thematic areas; fight against impunity and for access to justice and dismantling discrimination, inequality and marginalization, while the third thematic area of protection of human rights defenders and the right to defend rights - is a cross cutting one, which many partners are engaged in as a part of their work.
We support six grantee partners across Indonesia, a majority of them work on supporting communities in furthering land and environmental rights and protection. Within this thematic area, partners work with different strategies, including legal interventions, documentation, awareness - raising, as well as improving protection of human rights defenders including, indigenous and women human rights defenders. Another area that two of our grantee partners focus on is work against impunity and improving access to justice through documentation, advocacy, awareness - raising, campaigning, legal intervention, and capacity strengthening of survivors and victim families.

Our impact
At the NHRF, we collect big and small success stories from our grantee partners to show the impact they are able to achieve at various levels. Two of the stories from our grantee partners in Indonesia are described below.
NHRF grantee partner Yayasan Kompas Peduli Hutan (KOMIU)’s efforts including documentation, advocacy and legal interventions resulted in a temporary suspension of the license for a gold mine in Donggala, Central Sulawesi furthering the promotion and protection of land and forest management rights of the indigenous and local communities.
Since former-President Joko Widodo's expression of regret for past atrocities and setting up of a non-judicial reparation settlement in early 2023, NHRF grantee partners, IKOHI (Indonesian Association of the Families of the Disappeared) and SKP-HAM (the Solidarity of the Victims of Human Rights Violations) have been working towards ensuring the settlement is implemented effectively, supporting access of victims to the settlement team and ensuring that their asks taken into account. In Central Sulawesi, SKP-HAMs work on supporting victims access to the settlement mechanism has resulted in 455 families who are victims/survivors of past atrocities receiving documentation that helps them access rights restoration programs to including healthcare, financial support, education, and/or housing rights.
