#PrideMonth: Jeeva - defending sexual minorities in India

This week, the NHRF will highlight the voices of human rights defenders who are working towards strengthening the rights of LGBTIQ communities across the world. NHRF's grantee partner, Jeeva, is an LGBTIQ-led organization with a mission to “Create a platform for sexual minorities to participate equally in society, build a sustainable livelihood, and attain quality of life, self-esteem, and dignity".

Jeeva is based in Karnataka, south India, and works to ensure that the voices and concerns of sexual minorities become a part of the public discourse. Jeeva also works to foster and train LGBTIQ leaders who can promote and advocate for the human rights of the community at large. Facing discrimination and left without equal protection in the law, Jeeva’s work for LGBTIQ persons is critically important, not only to help promote progress on these issues but to support system in the community as one of the most important aspects of their work.

Through the NHRF-supported project, Jeeva has been focusing on the labor rights of the LGBTIQ community to create awareness and provide education on their rights and protections related to discrimination and harassment in the workplace and other important labor laws, policies, and social security schemes. Following the model of training of trainers to create leadership and increase resource persons in the community has been a large component of this important and much-needed work, along with their ongoing advocacy work. After the Supreme Court of India decriminalized homosexuality in 2018, Jeeva trained approximately 300 LGBTIQ-workers for work life with knowledge on workers’ rights and grievance redressal mechanisms.
