Job description:

The main role of the consultant is to advice the NHRF in our funding of human rights projects in Mexico in coordination with our Programme advisors by:

  • Assisting NHRF’s Programme Advisers in the review of proposals submitted to NHRF, providing contextual insight and due diligence concerning the applicant’s background
  • Some monitoring and evaluation of projects and organisations, including visits to and follow-up of supported organisations, as agreed in each case
  • Contributing to strategic planning of the NHRF’s engagement in Mexico, including fundraising
  • Identifying the needs of grantees related to safety and security


Qualifications needed:

  • Extensive experience in the country, especially with work on human rights issues
  • Solid network of contacts
  • Good reputation among human rights actors and organisations in the country
  • Proven experience in working with grassroot organisations
  • Fluent in English and Spanish
  • Experience with project design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation
  • Experience in protection and security of human rights defenders desirable
  • Experience in fundraising desirable
  • A team player and ability to be flexible and to give input to new ways of working

The NHRF has been supporting local human rights organisations in Mexico since 2012, and efforts were increased in 2015 after the country was made a prioritized country. The NHRF supports projects focusing on work against impunity and for access to justice, as well as work against discrimination and/or marginalisation of vulnerable individuals and groups, with a specific focus on indigenous people, victims of torture and disappearances, migrants, and human rights defenders at risk.
