Not one step back: Women take the lead for peace and security in Colombia

The NHRF celebrates the 20th anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 with women peacebuilders and WHRDs from Colombia.

The Norwegian Human Rights Fund joins Norwegian civil society in celebrating UNSCR 1325 and the larger WPS agenda by bringing together women peacebuilders from Colombia who are carrying out essential work for inclusive peace and security at different levels in Colombian society.

UNSCR 1325 unequivocally affirmed the essential role of women in peacebuilding and conflict prevention and resolution at the international level. It also called for the implementation of a gender perspective in the negotiation and implementation of peace agreements - 16 years later this was achieved to a certain extent through the historic Colombia peace agreement, and we have yet to see if implementation will follow this call.

The panelists, our grantee partners, work in different contexts and are pursuing peace in different ways - for environmental sustainability as an issue of peace and security, defending rights to land and territory and involved in socio-environmental conflicts, for gender equality on the national level, for justice for conflict-related violations on a community level via the transitional justice mechanisms, also through prevention, complaints, legal and psychosocial accompaniment and systematization of violence based on gender against women, while working on advocacy, social mobilization, training and education of their fellow communities, networking and sharing learning processes with other CSOs. Their diverse work demonstrates the diversity of women's skills and abilities and that there is no place where women don't belong.

More information about the Norwegian official celebration:

2020 marks 20 years since the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security (WPS). At the time, the resolution was described as groundbreaking; for the first time the Security Council recognized the crucial role of women's rights and women’s participation in international peace and security. Over the past 20 years, the number '1325' has become a well-established term in international politics and a further nine resolutions have been passed under the WPS umbrella. The normative framework is well developed, but there is still a great lack of implementation of the agenda. What is the future of the WPS agenda? What are the key challenges? And how can various actors work together to implement to agenda and contribute to change?

The Norwegian official celebration of the 20th anniversary of resolution 1325 will host a series of digital events from November 10th – 13th 2020 to critically discuss the past, present, and future of WPS.

The webinars have been organised by:

PRIO Gender, Peace and Security Centre and FORUM1325, represented by the following member organisations; Care Norway, FOKUS – Forum for Women and Development, Mental Health and Human Rights Info, ACT/ Norwegian Church Aid, and the Norwegian Human Rights Fund.
